Designed to be used in any course which is devoted wholly or partly to the study of multicultural education in the United States, this text provides a unique theme (intersecting cultures) from which to look at multicultural education issues. It's ongoing use of a few organizing concepts permit in-depth analysis for social foundations and multicultural education courses. The book provides a comprehensive study of the intersections of the dominant U. S. culture, the culture of economic opportunity, dominated cultures, immigrant cultures, school culture, racism, sexism, social class, multicultural curricula, and instructional methods in the United States and the global economy. The study of cultures is filled with rich examples of the lives of the many cultural groups living in the United States. The author uses a problem-posing prose that helps students think about issues of multiculturalism. Each chapter ends with a section on personal reflections which is designed to help students relate multiculturalism to their own lives. The second edition contains two new chapters (“Immigrant Cultures” and “Multiculturalism in the Global Economy”) and a wealth of new topics designed to make the revision a comprehensive survey of multiculturalism and of proposed solutions to multiculturalism issues.
About the Author
Joel Spring, professor of education at the New School University, received his Ph.D. in educational policy studies from the University of Wisconsin. His father was born a citizen of the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory prior to the abolishment of the Choctaw government and the creation of Oklahoma. Professor Spring’s current interest in Native American culture and history is a reflection of his Indian background. His major research interests are the history of education, multicultural education, Native American culture, and the politics of education. Professor Spring is the author of many books including The Cultural Transformation of a Native American Family and Its Tribe 1763-1995: A Basket of Apples; Images of American Life: A History of Ideological Management in Schools, Movies, Radio, and Television; and Political Agendas for Education: From the Christian Coalition to the Green Party.
