Book Description
Supervisory Management blends skill-building opportunities and traditional management principles to prepare learners to become supervisors in today's business world. The central theme of Supervisory Management is working through people--developing and empowering them to become better and more efficient in their roles. It closely follows the SCANS requirements for workplace competencies and foundation of skills and personal qualities needed for job performance. The text offers practical insights and advice to address common managerial situations, making it a useful reference for supervisors throughout their careers. In this sixth edition, the authors continue their "hands on" approach with numerous self-checks and skill-building opportunities, even more applications exercises.

About the Author
At the present time, Donald C. Mosley is professor of management at the University of South Alabama and also the founder and president of the Synergistic Consulting Group. Don and the Synergistic Group have been pioneers in the area of partnering, having designed and developed the original "partnering model" in the first formalized partnering workshop in the public sector. This model has been adopted throughout the United States and used internationally as well.

In the 1960s, as a young professor/consultant, Mosley developed his skills by being instrumental in helping a financially plagued chemical plant become the most profitable plant in the company's division within one year. During this period he was one of the first to utilize 360-degree evaluations by peers, work team members, and bosses as a basis for providing feedback and coaching for key managers. Leon Megginson has over ten years of managerial experience in the world of academics, practicing many of the skills found in our book. He served two years as associate dean of the business school at LSU and was chairman and dean of the school of business at the University of Mobile for eight years. He also served as operations officer of a squadron of over 100 pilots and airmen in the 25th Bomb Squad, U.S. Air Force, during WW II. He was a Fulbright Research Scholar in Spain during the 1960s, and was a Ford Foundation Advisor in Pakistan, assisting the Pakistani in the area of management development. Paul Pietri brings a wealth of knowledge of the supervisory field based on his over 25 years' experience as a trainer/consultant to private and public sector organizations. He has developed and conducted training designs in over 35 states for well over 5,000 supervisors from organizations such as International Paper Company, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Dupont, and others. Because of his extensive background in supervisory training, Pietri was chosen as one of seven U.S. team members to attend a Sao Paulo, Brazil, conference aimed at assisting Brazil's development of first- and mid-level managers. "Supervisors need and want answers to everyday, practical problems," Pietri feels. "A supervisory management textbook should employ, where possible, a strong hands-on approach that addresses real world issues and situations. I believe also that good text emphasizes the practical, skills-oriented side of supervision throughout the entire text, not just in special applications tossed in at the end of a chapter."

Since 1986 Pietri has been actively involved in course design and training for Bowater Carolina, helping the company shift from a traditional, authority-based organizational culture towards one that emphasizes empowerment, teamwork, and quality. "Supervisors are especially strained and play a pivotal role in such change," he states. "The new culture entails a dramatic turnaround from the traditional way of managing that these supervisors practiced and were encouraged to practice in the past. These challenges--learning the new skills of empowering, facilitating, coaching, and managing conflict, to name a few--are being made to supervisors from all types of organizations throughout the country."
