About the Author
Thomas Buckhoff is Manager/Senior Forensic Accountant for Eide Bailly, LLP-Fraudwise Division. He received his Bachelors and Master of Accountancy degrees from Brigham Young University and his Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Kentucky. Dr. Buckhoff is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE). From 1996-2003, Dr. Buckhoff taught at North Dakota State University where he was endowed with the Eide Bailly Presidential Professorship in Forensic Accounting for “teaching and scholarship...deemed to be exemplary.” In 2002, he was awarded tenure and received the Peltier Award for Teaching Innovation, a university-wide award established to recognize outstanding innovation in teaching. He frequently conducts anti-fraud continuing professional education (CPE) seminars for a variety of professional organizations. Dr. Buckhoff has also published fraud-related articles in the Journal of Forensic Accounting, Journal of Accountancy, Journal of Financial Crime, The CPA Journal, and The White Paper: Topical Issues in White-Collar Crime. He served as Associate Editor for the Journal of Forensic Accounting and is on the editorial board for The CPA Journal. Dr. Buckhoff actively served the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners as Chair of the Higher Education Committee and as a member of the Research Committee. My areas of research are fraud (typically with an emphasis on accounting education) and professional accounting certification. I have been teaching at MSU-Bozeman since 1994. I teach courses from the sophomore through graduate level, including Fraud Examination, Advanced Auditing, Principles of Auditing, Cost Accounting, Intermediate Accounting, Accounting Information Systems, and Principles of Accounting. I have received several teaching awards, including the 2003 Montana Society of CPAs Outstanding Educator Award. Research awards include the Institute of Management Accountants 1998 Lybrand Bronze Medal for an outstanding article of the year and the American Accounting Association Western Region 2000 Best Education Paper Award. I am the Scott and Barbara Heck Faculty Scholar, an award selected by the Dean, for outstanding teaching and research. I have published in several academic and practitioner journals, including: Journal of Accounting Education, Issues in Accounting Education, Advances in Accounting Education, Behavioral Research in Accounting, Journal of Forensic Accounting, The Journal of Accounting Case Research, Strategic Finance, Internal Auditor, Management Accounting, and The White Paper: Topical Issues on White-Collar Crime.
